My gallery in St. Louis, the Kodner, sponsors an art therapy
room at Ranken Jordan Pediatric Hospital in St, Louis. The
hospital’s architecture has a contemporary feel and
does an excellent job of bringing outdoor elements inside.
I was invited to provide a mural for the intake room where
children are poked and prodded there. The idea for the mural
being that it would distract the children from their discomfort.
The room
was proportioned similar to an aquarium, so, an undersea theme
fit perfectly. I enlisted some of my Hallmark friends for
character concepts, especially Rob Hatem and his “bad
neck tie fish!” The mural took two weeks to complete
altogether with numerous visits from staff and patients along
the way. Three children assisted, each painting a fish. Below
are a few quotes from the hospital staff:
“We
had our first patient intake there this morning and her response
(an 11 year old girl) was great! Lot's of questions like how
many fish and how long did it take. My personal impression
is "fantastic!"
Dr. Holekamp
“I
think it is absolutely GREAT!!! It’s great for the kids
with touches of "whimsy" …delightful for the
children and their parents. it is just a wonderful way to
greet new patients to our building!”
Sue Eager R.D.,
“The
kids’ love taking me in there when we walk by, they
always grab my hand & pull me that way.”
Sarah Wilson, Patient Care Tech.

Community
School
900 Lay Road
St. Louis, Mo 63124
The painting is based on a smaller outdoor Oil study from
the Kansas Flint Hills. For the larger canvas, I laid in a
rough of the composition and basic color for the students.
The second grade classes from the Community School worked
with me in groups, section by section, with the last group
smoothing and unifying the painting. I touched it up a bit,
but it is very much collaboration between the students and
me. The painting was auctioned at the Contemporary Art Museum
in St. Louis on March 4, 2006 and raised $1,600.00. I enjoyed
painting with the students and they were able to provide funding
for their school.
